Day 34 of Embracing the wonders of life!
Bakkerij Wammes, The Bakery that Built Memories
Last week, I visited my nephew and uncle’s bakery, a family business with a long tradition in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Although the bakery has moved several times within the city, it remains a significant piece of our family history. I fondly remember the days when my grandfather ran it—he always let me take some of the broken cookies they kept in a special place. These small moments made me feel connected to the bakery from a young age. We also had a Wammes family reunion last week, where the famous Wammes "Chipolata Cake" was being served !
While my father was once poised to take over the business, he had different plans. He and my mother chose to open a barber and beauty shop, leading to my uncle Peter to carry on the family bakery tradition. The bakery continued to play a central role in my life. I worked there during weekends and summers, and it was where I met the Angelique, the mother of my children. It's no wonder that this place holds a special place in my heart.
Inside the bakery, old photos hang on the walls, a tribute to the rich history of both our family and the city of Utrecht. Every visit is a journey through time, where the past and present come together in a space full of cherished memories.
I gave me the realisation that reconnecting with family history can be a meaningful experience. Here are some tips to get started:
* Visit old family landmarks – Whether it’s a childhood home or a family business, these places are full of stories and can evoke special memories.
* Look through old photos – Family photos can be windows into the past, reminding us of our heritage and the people who shaped us.
* Talk to relatives – Conversations with older family members can provide insight into your family’s history and deepen your understanding of where you come from.
By exploring your roots, you can learn valuable lessons about resilience, tradition, and the importance of family connections.
