Day 37 of Embracing the Wonders of Life !
Last Saturday, I had the privilege of attending a breathtaking performance of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, one of the most beautiful concert halls in the world. The music resonated through the space, lifting the audience into a state of pure awe. But what made this experience even more memorable was a brief yet important moment at the start of the concert.
Before the music began, one of the violists took a moment to address the audience. She praised the conductor, highlighting his unique approach to rehearsals. Unlike most conductors, he placed less emphasis on visual cues and more on honing the musicians' ability to listen to one another. His direction was not just something they watched but something they felt, and this method was particularly impactful because he was also the first violist. He conducted while playing alongside them, guiding through sound as much as through sight.
This approach struck me as a powerful metaphor for leadership. The best leaders, much like this conductor, do not control each individual’s every move. Instead, they create an environment where people find their own rhythm and role within the larger framework. They don’t micromanage but ensure that everyone is in harmony, contributing to the same melody.
In Saturdays performance, this leadership style truly shone. The ensemble moved as one, yet each musician maintained their individuality. The result was a performance full of emotional depth and nuance.
My recommendation? Whether you’re leading a team or working in collaboration, take inspiration from this conductor. Encourage others to find their own tune, but ensure the group stays in sync, working toward a common goal. Like in music, balance and harmony are key.
